Clarence BOWMAN, JR.

Clarence Edward Bowman, Jr., the son of Clarence E. Bowman, Sr. and Olivia Dunson Bowman was born on September 6, 1953 in Dayton, Ohio.

He attended Wogaman Elementary School and went on to graduate from Fairview High School where he exhibited leadership skills and was recognized as a leader among his classmates and friends. His years at Fairview and in the neighborhood and community were special and memorable for him. He was always involved in some kind of activity at school or in the community and was one of the first African American Eagle Scouts in Dayton. He played basketball and football at Fairview. Upon graduation from Fairview, Clarence earned degrees from the University of Cincinnati and the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science, and a Master’s Degree in Hospital Administration from The Ohio State University.

Clarence, Jr. or “Junior” as he was called by many family members and friends followed in the footsteps of his father and mother. As a member of Bethel Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Charles Brown, Clarence loved and supported the church. He could often be found in the lower level, talking to and charming the ladies of the church, often giving them boxes of candy and small stuffed animals. He was also very supportive of his cousin’s children, often attending their graduations and other special events. He loved to travel (especially abroad) and loved to entertain family and friends.

Clarence followed his parents’ footsteps by providing sensitive, caring services to the bereaved families of the Dayton community. First and foremost, he served the community through the services he offered the innumerable families whose lives he touched through the Bowman Funeral Chapel. He also served on numerous boards and was a member of many organizations including the NAACP, Sinclair Community College, the Dayton Urban League, Fifth-Third Bank, Past President of Buckeye State, Sigma Pi Phi Emeritus, Central State University, and the Boy Scouts of America. He extended a Bowman Family legacy through the African American Wellness Organization by establishing scholarships in his name and in the names of his parents through the Dayton Foundation. He was an ongoing sponsor of his alma mater, Fairview High School, and a mentor to Donald Black, and the Dunson Wilkes Family Reunion. He was also an avid supporter of the University of Dayton Basketball team and the Dayton Dragons Baseball team.

Clarence, Jr., was preceded in death by his father and mother, Clarence Edward and Olivia Bowman; aunts, Nathanielle Bowman Martin, Martha Oates, Louise Towns, Mary Dozier and Christine Johnson; uncles, J.C. Bowman, Lawrence Bowman, Ernest Bowman, Lee Bowman, and King D. Dunson, Jr.

Clarence leaves to cherish his memory, sister, Deborah Olivia Bowman of New York City; many cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends including his Bethel Baptist church family.
