Dorothy M. SMART

Dorothy M. Smart was born on January 11, 1935 to Dorsey Brown and Annie Laura (Gray) Brown in Elberton, Georgia. Her parents and 3 sisters all preceded her in death.

Dorothy moved to Cincinnati, Ohio with her parents when she was 7 years old to be close to her older sisters. She attended East Vocational High School and attended Cincinnati Technical College now Cincinnati State where she received an Associate Degree in Lab Technology.

Dorothy was a loyal and faithful employee of Standard Textile for 20 years as a seamstress. After earning her Associate Degree, Dorothy worked for Procter and Gamble as a Lab Technician until her retirement in 1994.

Upon retiring Dorothy decided to travel. Her travels included trips to the Caribbean with her close friend Freida Simmons. After traveling and enjoying retirement, Dorothy could not stay retired for long and made the decision to go back to work after attending school to become a Certified Nurse Assistant which she fondly called her ministry. During the last 12 years Dorothy has been a dedicated employee of American Mercy Home Health Agency where she worked until the very day she suddenly became ill. The patients she helped frequently expressed their fondness, appreciation and devotion for the special care she provided to them.

While in her 20's Dorothy was a model with Bobby Corbean Modeling, she enjoyed modeling especially with her close friends and family Rita Trimble, Betty Stallworth, Corrine Walker, Drucilla Maines, Helen Waller and Aletha Andrews. After modeling, Dorothy's true passion for sewing blossomed. She was a woman who loved to sew and for several years worked as a seamstress for We Sew Alteration Company. In addition, she had her own home-based sewing business "Dottie Do Alterations" where she enjoyed helping others look their best and enjoyed a laugh and prayer when needed.

Most of all Dorothy loved her church and being a Seventh Day Adventist Christian. She joined Shiloh SDA Church in September, 1967 under Pastor A.R. Jones after attending a tent effort by C.D. Brooks. Over the years, Dorothy served in many capacities including Sabbath School Teacher, Head Deaconess, Deaconess, Usher, Prayer Band Member and she faithfully attended Prayer Meeting each week. One of the most precious things in Dorothy's heart was prayer; she organized and led the Early Morning Prayer Service which is held the first Sabbath of each month prior to the start of Sabbath School. She prayed and participated on the Prayer line every Thursday evening: Dorothy was a Prayer Warrior and believed with all her Heart that there was nothing she could not take to the Lord in prayer.

Dorothy leaves to cherish her memory: Her loving children; Reginald Hood, Regina McDonald and Daniel Smart; Grandchildren; Ramon Griffin, Afrika Hood, William Bradford McDonald, Sara Smart, Olivia McDonald, and Isaiah Smart; Great-Granddaughter; Sanaa Hood; Nieces Helen Waller and Aletha (Chris) Andrews, Renita Spaulding; Sister-in-law Vandora Spaulding; Special and long-time friends William Grant, Ada Powell and Robert Davis; and a host of many loving family members, friends and extended church family.

She will be deeply missed.

Family will receive friends from 10am-12pm on Friday, April 11, 2014 at Shiloh SDA Church, 3660 Washington Ave, Cincinnati, OH 45229. Funeral Service will begin at 12pm; Interment will follow at Vine Street Hill Cemetery.

Dorothy was a great friend and confidant. She was very spiritual and shared her spirituality via kind words and deeds to those in need of counsel. She had empathy and offered advice, if requested. In addition, she served as a personal tailor to me and my friends. She wanted all to “feel good” and “look good.” We had a conversation shortly before she passed and she mentioned her blessings & family and how she enjoyed her life. I will truly miss our friendship! - Brenda Cooper
