Mavis PAYNE

Mavis Payne, the second oldest of ten children was born on August 24, 1941 in Jones County, Georgia to the union of the late Robert and Mabel Richardson. She confessed Christ at an early age at Community Baptist Church and later joined The Morning Star Baptist Church, under the Pastorate of Emeritus Calvin A. Harper. She served faithfully over the church nursery for Thirty plus years. She also sang with the Early Morning Singers.

On June 10, 1959, she was joined in Holy Matrimony to John Payne. To this union, 7 children were born: two boys and five girls. After separation, Mavis Payne met her life-long partner, Mr. Charles Shelton. Mavis's father came to Ohio in 1943 seeking employment. He was hired at the American Cyanamid Co. Mr. Richardson moved his wife (Mabel) and his 3 small children, which included Mavis to Cincinnati, Ohio to begin a new life in the north. Mavis Payne attended Cincinnati Public schools, including Robert A. Taft. She later attended Stowe Adult Center, where she excelled in math, typing, business, bookkeeping and other office practices. Mavis also attended Cincinnati State and completed her teaching certification. Children were always dear to Mavis's heart. Having her own seven was not enough! So, she decided to gain employment with the Department of Education and worked as a Teaching Assistant for Twenty-Six years. She retired in 2000. Mavis Payne was a member of the Order of Eastern Stars - Peace Lodge Number 052.

As a Mother, Mavis was firm with her children. She said what she meant and meant what she said!!! She loved God, her family, her church and most especially her children in the nursery. She was fun-loving, enjoyed cooking, gatherings and being on her computer. As a child…Mavis was a Double-Dutch Queen! As an adult she loved to attend the family functions and known to "cut a rug". She leaves to mourn her children: John Payne Jr., Gregory Payne (Marsha), Shelia Stegall (Charles), Lydia Ball (Michael), Monica Bedford (Michael), Tecia Payne and Kimberly Payne; 22 Grandchildren, 43 Great Grand Children and a host of honorary family members and friends.
